Mathilde Aubier X Uniqlo
For the opening of its new store on Avenue de Wagram in Paris, Uniqlo France asked Mathilde Aubier to create three murals paying tribute to the building's 1930's jazz club roots.
For the opening of its new store on Avenue de Wagram in Paris, Uniqlo France asked Mathilde Aubier to create three murals paying tribute to the building's 1930's jazz club roots.
“The mural references the Club de l'Étoile; I wanted to bring back to life the atmosphere of that place and its era. I used bright tones to evoke the joyful energy of the venue and the lightness of jazz."
"The star motif, repeated several times, echoes the club’s name and adds dynamism to the composition. I drew inspiration from Matisse’s fresco *La Danse*, adopting the principle of large, repetitive blocks of color that evoke the rhythm of music."
"On these blocks, collage figures—such as bird-musicians—come to “dance,” recalling the artistic and surrealist avant-garde who frequented these venues and brought them to life. The cut-out elements function as accents, evoking jazz and improvisation. I also had the idea of adding retro-style feet along the steps to honor the memory of those who walked in this place back in the day.”
Mathilde’s work will be visible at Uniqlo Wagram for a limited time. She also designed a new T-shirt and embroidery collection for UTme, featuring five exclusive designs taken from the mural.
